FRIENDS OF KARL WATT

Keeping Karl's Dream and Spirit Alive by Fighting ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease)

About

The Friends of Karl Watt

The purpose of the Friends of Karl Watt is twofold. First and foremost is to raise home care funding for ALS patients in Karl Watt’s memory and honour. Second is to generate awareness about Karl, his story and his fight against ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease).

The Friends of Karl Watt is a combined effort of volunteers that include Karl’s family and friends from school, the music industry, sports, etc. After some of his friends visited Karl and his family in Nanaimo, BC, in early 2010, it was decided that something needed to be done about the lack of support for home care.

Here are some quick facts about Karl’s life with ALS…

  • Karl was diagnosed with ALS in 2006.
  • Prior to his diagnosis, Karl was an active session drummer for various rock and jazz bands.
  • He moved from Surrey to Nanaimo to live with his parents, Norm and Misty, in 2009.
  • Karl required about $5000 every month for 24hr home care.
  • Our health care system only provides 4hrs a day for home care.
  • Karl passed away peacefully on July 20, 2010 after a 4-1/2 year battle against the disease.

Today Karl’s family, friends and colleagues have come together to help other families cope with the lack of home care support for ALS patients. It is our hope that other people living with this merciless disease have a place to turn so that they do not feel alone.

Our goal now is to keep Karl’s memory alive and help other ALS patients that wish to stay home and be with loved ones.
